ROCKWOOL Comfortboard® 80 — 1.5" × 2' × 4' (48 sqft per pack)
Rockwool Comfortboard 80 is a rigid stone wool board for continuous insulation (CI). Non-structural, designed for exterior walls, foundation perimeters, basement walls, and cathedral ceilings. The Pacific NW standard for high-performance building envelope work.
Specifications (1.5" × 2' × 4' size)
| R-value | R-6.3 (R-4.2 per inch × 1.5", per Rockwool published) |
| Dimensions | 1.5" × 24" × 48" |
| Coverage per pack | 48 sqft (6 boards per pack, each board 8 sqft) |
| Weight per pack | ~52 lb (~24 kg) |
| Density | 8 lb/ft³ (128 kg/m³) |
| Compressive strength | 439 psf at 10% compression, per ASTM C165 — non-structural, compression resistant for typical CI loads |
| Fire rating | Non-combustible, melt point ~1177°C (2150°F) |
| Vapor permeability | Vapor-open (allows drying) |
| Water resistance | Water-repellent, low moisture sorption |
Need higher density / compressive strength? Comfortboard 80 is the standard CI board (8 lb/ft³). For applications under higher compressive load (parking deck, walkable roof, plaza), Rockwool's denser Comfortboard 110 (11 lb/ft³) is the answer — or our house equivalent PowerWool RigiBoard PRO MAX at the same 11 lb/ft³ density, usually at a lower price point.
Why builders pick Comfortboard 80 for CI
- Vapor-open — lets the wall dry to the outside, critical in cold climates and humid jobsites
- Fire performance — non-combustible per ASTM E136. Doesn't melt and run, doesn't add fuel to the wall assembly
- Cuts with a bread knife — fastest CI install in the category, no specialty tools
- Won't rot, mold, or attract pests — stone wool is chemically inert
- Acoustically dense — improves STC ratings, useful for interior walls too
- LEED-eligible — made from natural + recycled materials, contributes to BD+C points
Common applications
- Continuous exterior insulation over sheathing (the main use case)
- Exterior perimeter insulation around foundations
- Basement wall insulation (interior or exterior side)
- Under flat concrete slabs
- Cathedral ceilings in residential wood-frame construction
How much do I need?
For continuous insulation over a wall: your wall sqft = packs needed × 48. Example: a 200 sqft wall section needs 5 packs. For larger projects, hit "Get a Quote on This Order" — we size the package and book freight at project rates.
